NEW DELHI — Indian Railways is undergoing an unprecedented technological and passenger service renaissance. The Ministry of Railways has finalized deployment schedules for two transformative passenger-facing initiatives: the commercial launch of the long-distance 160 km/h Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets, alongside the national rollout of the unified Indian Railways Super-App developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS).
The coordinated upgrades aim to fundamentally elevate passenger comfort, optimize ticket booking ergonomics, and enhance operational safety along high-density trunk lines connecting India’s primary metropolitan centers.
The Unified Passenger Super-App: Eliminating Digital Fragmentation
For over a decade, railway passengers have navigated multiple disjointed digital applications—IRCTC Rail Connect for reserved tickets, UTS for suburban unreserved travel, NTES for live train tracking, and Rail Madad for onboard grievances. The new CRIS Super-App synthesizes these services into a streamlined, high-availability architecture:
- Single Sign-On (SSO): Unified identity verification linked with Aadhaar and DigiLocker for instant ticket booking and tatkal verification.
- Integrated UTS and Platform Ticketing: Geo-fenced suburban unreserved ticketing and QR-code platform passes issued directly within the app interface.
- Real-Time GPS Tracking & Station Amenities: Seamless display of train position, platform allocations, coach composition, and porter booking services.
- Onboard Service Integration: Real-time meal ordering from verified e-catering vendors delivered directly to passenger berths.

Vande Bharat Sleeper: Engineering Excellence for Overnight Transit
Manufactured jointly by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai and consortium manufacturing partners, the 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets represent a qualitative leap in overnight passenger rail. Engineered with lightweight austenitic stainless-steel carbodies, the trainsets have successfully completed 180 km/h oscillation and emergency braking trials supervised by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO).
Key passenger comforts include sound-dampened acoustic interiors reducing cabin noise below 60 decibels, ergonomic modular berths with individual reading lights and USB charging ports, and pressurized bio-vacuum lavatories equipped with anti-bacterial surfaces.
Kavach 4.0 and High-Density Corridor Upgrades
Crucially, all newly commissioned Vande Bharat Sleeper sets come pre-fitted with Kavach 4.0, India’s indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. Operating across UHF radio frequencies and RFID track transponders, Kavach automatically regulates train speed in adverse weather conditions, prevents Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), and activates emergency braking if another train is detected on the same track block, guaranteeing safety standards on India’s busiest transit corridors.
