KARAIKUDI, TAMIL NADU — In what automotive engineers and materials scientists are hailing as a watershed moment for the global clean energy transition, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research’s Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CSIR-CECRI) has executed commercial technology licensing agreements for its breakthrough solid-state lithium battery chemistry. Designed to replace combustible liquid electrolytes with an indigenous ceramic-polymer matrix, the cells achieve an unprecedented volumetric energy density of 420 Watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg).
The technology has been transferred to a consortium of Indian automotive and energy conglomerates under the Government’s ₹18,100-crore Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cells (ACC), paving the way for commercial gigafactory manufacturing.
Elimination of Thermal Runaway and Fire Risks
The primary existential challenge inhibiting consumer electric vehicle (EV) adoption in tropical climates has been thermal management. Traditional lithium-ion batteries rely on flammable organic solvent electrolytes that can overheat under high ambient Indian summer temperatures exceeding 45°C, precipitating catastrophic thermal runaway fires.
CSIR-CECRI’s solid-state cell incorporates a dense, non-combustible garnet-type ceramic separator. During extreme mechanical deformation, nail penetration, and electrical overcharge tests, the cells exhibited zero flame ignition, zero toxic vapor release, and stable electrical conductivity up to 140°C.

800-Kilometer Range and Ultra-Fast 12-Minute Recharging
Prototype 85-kilowatt-hour (kWh) solid-state battery packs installed in electric test vehicles completed extended endurance runs on the Bengaluru-Chennai expressway, registering a verified single-charge range of 820 kilometers under realistic air-conditioned driving conditions—nearly double the range delivered by conventional liquid NMC chemistry of identical weight.
Furthermore, because solid-state electrolytes resist micro-dendrite formation across the anode surface, the cells support 4C ultra-fast charging rates. At 350-kW DC fast-charging stations, drivers can replenish battery capacity from 10% to 80% in approximately 12 minutes, eliminating long-distance highway charging delays.
Domestic Sourcing and Geoeconomic Independence
Crucially for India’s strategic sovereignty, the chemistry minimizes reliance on scarce foreign cobalt and nickel inputs, leveraging indigenous silicon-graphene composite anodes and regionally sourced lithium salts. By scaling domestic production across upcoming gigafactories in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, India is establishing an end-to-end clean mobility supply chain that insulates domestic automakers from international critical mineral cartels.
